These little ones seem to be quite common here, and much easier to approach than the few specimens I was able to find up near Seattle. Got these while "car birding" this afternoon along a road behind the local airport...

The prey in the first photo is quite large in proportion to the bird.

Yeah, kestrels are small, but they're fierce little things! Shortly after I took this, she picked up her prize and flew into the grass a few yards away and hid it for later, then flew off across a field.
