Last week my son and I went to see Free Solo at the Crest Theater. No, it isn't another Star Wars sequel but a movie documenting Alex Honnold's record first solo climb without ropes of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.

The movie was produced by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and her husband Jimmy Chin, a famous mountain climber and photographer.

I went to the movie to see Chin's photography as much to watch the climb. The scenes are spectacular and involved very special techniques to photograph the climb without distracting the climber. The crew was also faced with the possibility of filming Honnold's death if something went wrong.

I recommend seeing the movie. You may want to forego watching it at an IMax theater if you are afraid of heights. The Crest is a "bargain" theater in Shoreline/North Seattle which shows second run, foreign, independent, and art movies. It also serves beer and wine, which may help you get through some of the hair raising climbing scenes.
