hooded mergansers, or "hoodies", are among my favorite waterfowl to photograph. they're moderately common winter visitors to the park at Juanita Bay in Kirkland, and i've managed some pretty decent photos of them over the last few years. as is typical of birds, the males are quite striking, while the females are rather drab... these were shot with my 40D and 400mm
