When I used a 55-200 at 200, I didn't have any problem holding gear free hand. on my Fuji fixed lens model, it goes to about 380MM (in 35 film era) there it gets difficult to master a perfect stable shot.
 
Beautiful owl shots! Tryon Creek is one of the things I miss about living in that area (I recall going there for a birding adventure in the 7th grade, that trip got me hooked on bird watching)
