The Edmonds smoke screen sunset tour continued Saturday night (8/5/17) with a stop at Haines Wharf Park. The park has a nice streetside viewing platform complete with telescope, benches, and a map of the Olympics for use on smoke-free days. http://www.edmondswa.gov/visit-a-park-text-15/parks-map/haines-wharf-park.html
The layout of the park was such that I dragged out all three cameras: 7D + 500L + 1.4x TC (tripod mounted), 5DIII + 24-105L wide angle zoom (tripod mounted), and 7DII + 70-200L telephoto zoom (handheld).

I thought the dilapidated wharf would make a good backdrop. A passing train was an added bonus.

7D + 500L + 1.4x TC, -1 exposure compensation, full frame. The smoke acted as a natural filter. I don't know if the black dot on the sun is some kind of sunspot or just a spot on the camera's sensor.
The first sunset of September signaled the beginning of the Labor Day weekend. For many it is the end of summer vacation and they were out to enjoy a very comfortable evening along the Edmonds waterfront.
Fishermen (and women) were casting their lines off the fishing pier.
Saturday afternoon (9/16/17) smoke from a forest fire rolled over Puget Sound. With rain predicted this week, it may be the last smokescreen sunset of the year.
Sunset Monday (12/4/17) was 4:17 pm PST. The earliest and most southerly sunsets of the year will be with us from now through the first day of winter (12/21). This presents a brief window of opportunity to photograph the sunset from the marsh.
Thursday (12/7/17) my son and I went to Marina Beach to photograph the sunset. The sun will set at its earliest (4:16pm, PST) and most southerly position from now through the first day of winter.

The countdown of 4:16pm southern most sunsets, which started on 12-6 and continues through the first of winter, led my son and me to the fishing pier Wednesday (12-13-17) evening.
We are having our third or fourth consecutive California summer of warm sunny days with little or no rain. I won't complain because it is not as hot as the real California summers I experienced in Sacramento or as hot and humid as the ones I suffered through when I lived in SE Missouri (pronounced Misery) for five years when I was a kid.
The resulting smog and haze buildup produces dramatic sunsets. The most popular place in town to view the sunset is from none other than Sunset Ave. Legal parking is at a premium near sunset. The trick is to arrive early and hope your bladder holds out until nightfall.
I am always looking for something in the foreground to make each shot unique. I got lucky as a northbound freight passed through town.
I had set up my super telephoto package of the 5DIII + 500L telephoto + 2x III teleconverter to photograph to photograph birds. I didn't know if it would work well for sunsets, so I gave it a try. These shots are all uncropped. My inspiration is the shots of sunsets in Africa often seen on nature progams on television.
