If you’ve ever wanted to feel what it’s like to step into a time machine, watch this old footage shot in New York City in 1911. Culled from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in NYC, the film was originally shot by the Swedish company Svenska Biografteatern during a trip to America.
Interesting old footage. The restoration was very good. I watched in on full screen and it was very clear.
You can find lots of historic old videos on You Tube. Here is one of a cable car ride in San Francisco filmed four days before the 1906 earthquake and fire that destroyed most of the downtown area. Read the notes on You Tube to see the history behind the video.
Some of those are very cool. I also like when they slow them down to avoid the catoonish look of playing them at high speed. They were filmed slower, I don't recall the exact frame rate, but they look silly when played back at 60 frames per second. Slowing them down to close to the original speed makes them look much better. Also, they're really quite sharp. I think we're used to seeing lousy copies of copies, and when you see something that uses a good resolution it's surprising how well they did.
I seem to recall watching the cable car one before and thinking it was pretty obvious it was orchestrated, as there is an awful lot of foot traffic and activity, but it's still a neat glimpse into a bygone era.
