yeah, they're usually pretty timid here too, but once in a while they'll come in close enough for a good shot. i've actually had them swim to within about 30 feet before their natural skittishness took over and they moved away... the males seem a little more timid than the females, when they're not together.

I was fascinated when I first noticed how the male Wood Duck can manipulate its crest. In your shot, his crest is at about a 45 degree angle. In my shot it is flattened down on his neck. I've seen other images where it sticks out straight behind his head - the little white stripe is horizontal. Curious. I wonder if it shows some state of "alert" or something.
