Not only to this forum but to photography in general. Because I'm so green, I find these sites to be somewhat intimidating. I have a question though. I have a Canon EOS Rebel T1i, an entry level DSLR. So far I'm very happy with the camera because of the ease in operation. I'm in the market for a flash unit or speedlight and I have no idea what the best options are. I would like to have a dedicated flash that would do most of the work when I want it to. Any suggestions. Thanks.
Tom
First off welcome to the forum. You can learn a lot here and dont feel intimidated. I shoot Nikon but I think Canon has a speedlight that offers wireless off-camera abilities which I have found gives a lot of creative freedom if you will.
I just went to the Canon Speedlight page
http://usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/speedlite_flash_lineup/speedlite_270ex_ii and they mention that the small 270 EXII speedlight has a slave function which could be a good way to start. If you want more power and the ability to rotate the flash to bounce the light off walls etc... go with a larger unit. I really like Nikon's comparable small flash that allows you to at least bounce the light off the ceiling by rotating up/down only.
The reason I like wireless IR triggered or slave flash units is that you can use something like a 70-200 for portraits and your flash can be mounted on a tripod closer to the subjects (and angled) to the subject.
These are just my personal preferences.
YAY...another Oregonian!!! Hey there!!!
