how far did you have to hike, how many times, and how long did you have to wait for that perfect shot?
 
I can see why that's a finalist shot, I bet it's even more amazing printed out large.

It takes time to learn to get images like these (sometimes you can get lucky, but not on a regular basis). Practice a lot, read the manual and understand your camera, learn about light, read the manual and some more and ask lots of questions in forums like this. Learn to get the camera off of auto mode so you have control of the exposure. Then it's time to learn all about how to deal with the image in photo editing software to get the most out of what you captured in the camera.
