This lovely male ringneck came out in the open as I was arriving at one of my winter birding sites on Friday. I pulled over to the side of the road and got out and snapped some photos before the pheasant wandered into the taller grass. When I got to the parking lot, I noticed a hunter just taking his shotgun out of his truck, and asked him what he was after. "Pheasant," he answered. I wished him good luck and smiled as he walked off in the opposite direction from where I'd "shot" this bird...
